Window to Maui!
No matter where you are there is a great Maui view waiting for you right here.
Sunset therapy
It is quiet after this evening's session. We enjoyed ourselves a great deal tonight. My guests really went for it which was a welcome release from the week. I am blessed to some how still be functioning after the fires. It is a cold feeling knowing how many of my friends have lost so much so quickly. The chill of loss is felt all through the community that is for sure.
After we said our goodbyes I sat for a moment to watch the last bit of light. The sea was calm as if it couldn't be bothered to send a wave to shore. She seemed quite content dancing with the shimmering light. Even the winds of Kihei decided to take a break and just play gently with the palm leaves.
This was all a welcome bit of deja vu which I sat and savored well past the sunset.
I've been here a long time.
These little things have been a consistent comfort and reminder to me about where my roots are. Isn't always the little things?
Even in hard times there is something about Maui with it's eclectic personality and style, it's familiar way that is encapsulated simply in the word "home".
I sometimes wonder what the mindset is. If I can come to some understanding then I don't quite as irritated. Maybe they think there is a dedicated staff at the resorts that picks up what ever trash is left behind on the beaches? Maybe they come from a place that is so overrun with trash that it is somehow normal? Maybe the kids have them so wound up they simply forgot?
What ever the case may be it's hard to be ok with seeing a beautiful place like this being littered so often. I shoot at the resorts often and this is every single day that someone leaves their coffee or tea cup on the rocks with their lei (the string inside stays long aftet the flowers die), plastic packaging from their snorkel gear, discards from their day.
I caught myself a while ago as I finished up my session and began picking up stuff on the way back to the parking lot. It seemed as if every step I took there was another thing to pick up and I had begun to think negatively. "Who raised these people?!" I thought when my hands became too full to manage camera gear and all the trash.
STOP!!!!
This is my happy time ya know? Having just completed a session with another incredible family who I really connected with while getting all the shots I wanted the way I wanted them. Yet, there I was walking back the car with a disdain in my heart and very possibly on my face. Neither are helping me.
That was the moment I decided to simply do it out of love.
It think its the little things that can be the most rewarding. So when I do them I do them with a smile. There is something uplifting in the moment now. I showed up and rocked the session, made new friends, and left it a little cleaner than I found it.
Spin the moment.
There is one thing I can be sure of after all these years is that Maui's community is truly amazing. While I have not spoken much on the recent wild fires I will say that it is the willingness of people to help one another has cast a light on a really dark situation. Today's blog post is a simple act of giving gratitude to those who give of themselves so freely.
Inspiration.
So much has happened since the last check-in!!
New Way Photography Maui is now an LLC and I couldn't be more excited about it. Have you already planned your summer vacation??
Are you ready to get your feet wet?????
Just wrapped up an fun shoot with INDIGO WILD SWIMWEAR featuring the incredible Uilani and I couldn't be more pleased with the images. Shelby creates dream swimwear and tonight's offerings were right on point. Much gratitude for requesting my presence. I was so relieved when I heard Uilani was going to be the model this evening. She is as talented behind the lens as she is as a subject.
Happy to have had Dev there as a crew member, thank you son for keeping dad's light out of the water! .. I would have dropped it.
